Hamburg is a bustling industrial city with lots to offer, but it can easily get very expensive! I took the challenge of doing Hamburg completely free and here are the best FREE things to do in Hamburg, Germany!
1 Take an early morning walk around the Harbor.
The harbor along the Elbe River is one of the oldest and most important trade routes in Europe. It is a very beautiful and peaceful area to wander through early in the morning before the city has come alive.
2 Sunday morning Fish Market
If you are looking for a more fast paced morning and are in Hamburg on a Sunday, then you must make the trip to the famous Fish Markt. Since 1703 this market has been selling the freshest fish in the city and now sells all sorts of food, flowers, and spices from all over the world. However, make sure you get there early! The market opens at 5AM and closes at 9:30AM sharp.
3 Marvel at the impressive architecture of the Hamburg Rathaus
The Rathaus is an impressive structure that is hard to miss when in Hamburg. Located right in the city center and is absolutely stunning. If you are there during December, be sure to grab some gluh wein and currywurst from the Christmas Market right out front!
4 Window shop on Neuer Wall
Pretend to be rich and wander down Neuer Wall to see the fancy and expensive shops lining the road of this famous shopping district in Hamburg!
5 Walk around Alster Lake in the heart of Hamburg
Walk around the edge of Alster Lake to get stunning views of Hamburg. Go as the sun is setting to get beautiful reflections off the lake then grab dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area or even better (cheaper) pack some dinner and have a picnic on the edge of the lake!
6 St Michaels Church
To see the older part of Hamburg take a walk to St Michaels Church. You will walk through beautiful old neighborhoods and end up at the gorgeous church. It’s completely free to go inside, but if you want an impressive view of the city pay 5 euros to go to the top of the tower!
Head to the neighborhood of Speicherstadt as the sun is setting to get beautiful photos of this picturesque neighborhood with winding canals! Definitely instagram worthy 🙂
8 Alter Elb Tunnel
To experience a bit of the history of Hamburg take a walk through the Alter Elb Tunnel. This is an old car tunnel that runs under the River Elb that has been opened back up for pedestrians. Take a walk through to be transported back in time! You will take a lift down and then walk underneath the river. The walk is close to 2km, so make sure you budget about an hour. Once you are on the other side you get stunning views of the city, so it is well worth it.
